Local Area In Cumbria
The pleasant village of Warwick On Eden overlooks one of England’s most beautiful rivers 'The Eden'. The source of the river is on the high limestone fells above Mallerstag Common, Near the North Yorkshire border, and makes its way across Eastern Cumbria, with the hills of the North Pennines to the east and the fells of the Lake District to the West, to Carlisle. Here it merges with other rivers to form the great Solway Firth estuary. For much of its way the river is accompanied by the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway a spectacularly scenic route which is the perfect means of accessing the Eden Valley. The river and its tributaries flow over wild open moorland after which it enters the valley where it (and its tributaries) have cut spectacular gorges.A fine example of one of these gorges can be seen at Wetheral just a five minute drive from The Queens. The spectacular railway viaduct rises some 200 feet over the river while the river below runs through tree covered gorges which show remains of their once Roman occupiers. Other views of the river and area can be seen on the www.visitcumbria.com website. For those who like quiet unspoilt walks the Geltsdale Fells above Castle Carrock (15 minutes drive), Gelt Woods, Wetheral Woods, Talkin Tarn, Wreay Woods are all within 15 t0 20 minutes drive of the Queens. Slightly further a field are the Solway Firth, The Calbeck Fells (made famous by the hunter John Peel) the Scottish Border Country (with the Border Reviers Heritage Trail) and of course the English Lake District (Ullswater is about 35 minutes away).
To say that The Queens at Warwick is set in some of England's most beautiful countryside would be an understatement. The Smith family and their staff at The Queens will be happy to put together a programme of walks and places to visit during your stay.
The Border town of Carlisle is situated only ten minutes from The Queens. The city has been fought over by the English and Scottish many times over the years and has a fine Castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was held), Borders Museum and Cathedral. Hadrian’s Wall ran through the town and several National Cycle ways and walks converge in Carlisle.
